Nations Championship! What it it? How does it work? What is going on? Who is in charge here?
The last question is particularly pertinent - especially for World Rugby - but the first few we have covered.
The Nations Championship is a new initiative designed to replace the Summer and Autumn Tours (or Winter and Spring depending on your hemisphere). The top 6 Northern and Southern Hemisphere sides are separated into league tables, and each team will play the 6 opposing hemisphere sides once - 3 now and 3 in the traditional Autumn window.
At the end of these 6 matches the league tables will play the opposing ranks in a ‘Grand Final’ at the end of November.
Below shows how the Algo sees the first iteration of the tournament going. You can see the chances of each side finishing in each position, and their likely opposition in the final.
This is also available on the website, will be updated on a day by day basis and is interactive. You can progress teams into the various finals and see the chances against whichever opposition you choose.
A few interesting things straight off the bat - England above Ireland? Even after their disastrous Six Nations? This is down to the location of key fixtures. England play South Africa away, but New Zealand and Australia at home. Whereas Ireland are the opposite. Neither is expected to beat South Africa, regardless of location, but both will be expected to beat Argentina, Fiji and Japan. So they key fixtures against Australia and New Zealand will have great bearing on their final position. Advantage England, for now. We’ll see how the results progress!
